Backbone IT Group is offering a complimentary search marketing consultation in exchange for help with a research survey they are carrying out with Lancaster University’s Knowledge Business Centre.

The short online survey, which takes just 2 minutes to complete, is measuring awareness and attitudes towards a new field of online marketing.

All Chamber members who respond to the survey are entitled to claim a free website conversion summary carried out by a consultant from the Backbone IT Group internet marketing team. This will include advice on how they might increase the number of sales and enquiries the website generates.

Backbone IT Group is a leading provider of search engine optimisation, internet marketing and software development services with offices in the UK, US and China.

The data from the survey will be completely anonymous and form part of an industry study; the results of which will be published on the Backbone IT Group website and in industry forums.

Take the survey and claim your website analysis now.

A Relaxed cat on a LaptopToday, the ubiquity of high speed internet connections means it’s easier than ever before to become an entirely web-based worker. This is especially so if you are freelance, self-employed or work from home.

Over on the Freelance Switch blog, they’ve recently run a series of four articles looking at why becoming a web-based worker can be good for your career, and how to go about it. Although these tips have been written with freelancers in mind, they may be useful for anyone who home or tele-works, or is looking to make the most of new communication technologies.

Part 1: Why you should do it. An outline of the series and how it could benefit you.

Part 2: Finding work online. Tips on using online tools to publicise your business and win new contracts.

Part 3: The Working Day. What tools you’ll need to work at home or on the move and how to manage your time and productivity.

Part 4: Working anywhere. How to create true mobility in your working practice.

Obviously these are just an introduction, but they make an intriguing case for changing how you work and open up the posibilities of new working models.

Do you have any tips on being a web worker or mobile / home offices? Let us know in the comments.

Only Half Of SMEs Have A Website November 21, 2007

Today, the BBC is asking the question ‘do small firms really need a website’?

According to the Federation of Small Businesses, only about half SMEs have an online presence.

The article goes on to point out that having a website is not always appropriate, depending on the business concerned. However, it also makes the point that an effective site allows people beyond your usual catchment area to find out about you and potentially become your customers.

Even without online sales functionality, a website can be a great asset as a marketing tool or as an online portfolio, listing your goods, services or past projects. This can give interested parties a sense of who you are and what you do, thus creating an element of trust and confidence in you before they even get in touch.

Obviously there are many different levels of web sites available. From all singing, all dancing e-commerce sites to simple brochure sites, the choice is yours. It doesn’t even have to cost a lot. You could have a company blog (like the one you’re reading now) up and running in an afternoon, and all for free. We use WordPress, but there are lots of simple, low cost solutions out there.

Liverpool Chamber is a firm believer in using technology to boost business. If you need any help or advice on how ICT can help you, please contact us or our good friends at Merit.
