Free Workshop – 18 June 2008

The Promoting Tender Opportunities programme is available to businesses that have been trading for less than 3 years and are based in Merseyside.

This ESF-funded project will provide free training and support to new businesses with the aim that they will have the necessary entrepreneurial skills and business knowledge to successfully bid for a variety of tender opportunities.

The workshop on the 18th June covers three essential areas of business:

  • An Overview on Standard Terms and Conditions of Contracts, which takes the form of a discussion on what to consider when entering into Contracts using Standard Terms & Conditions, and which includes a brief resume of some common terms and conditions. The dangers of not having these properly drafted are also covered.
  • The much documented credit crunch in consumer credit is impacting on business in no small measure, in some cases leading to insolvencies. In order to help safeguard the future of your business a short presentation will outline how to improve cash flow and reduce bad debt, thereby improving and protecting profit.
  • A short session will take you through the marketing MOT using a Checklist to improve efficiency and help ensure success.

So, we’ve not lifted a story from Lifehacker for a while. To make up for it, here’s a handy list of alternative software applications you can run on your machine. They replace, and often surpass, the more familiar names you may be familiar with. They say:

“It may be the year 2008, but a whole lot of sucktacular software still rears its ugly head on PC’s everywhere, even when better-behaved options are freely available. Whether it’s molasses-slow bloatware, shameless adware, anemic default apps, or “Your trial period has expired!” nagware, it’s time to replace stinky Windows software with its superior (but lesser-known) alternative.”

The list includes alternatives to:

  • Adobe
  • AOL instant messenger
  • Internet Explorer
  • Quick Time
  • Norton Anti Virus
  • Media players / downloaders like Limewire, iTunes and Quick Time

waste-management-pic.jpgConstruction firms are being urged to take early action before the planned enforcement of Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) before April 2008. These plans are due to become a legal requirement for all construction projects over £300,000 on 6th April 2008. Waste reduction is increasingly important for environmental and financial reasons. It is best to reduce waste at source, either by better design, or by improving operational efficiency. This may include the re-use or recovery of materials.

SWMPs provide a structure for systematic waste management at all stages of a project’s delivery.

The key benefits to your business:

  • Provides structured approach to management and recycling on site
  • Reduces cost of waste management
  • Increase profit margins
  • Better control of regulatory risks relating to materials and wastes on site
  • Compliance of contractual needs of public and private sector clients
  • Help you to deal with any queries from environmental regulatory bodies

Colin Woods Associates will be delivering the presentation. So come along to this FREE event organised by Groundwork Merseyside to find out how you should implement a SWMP, and how you can save money by improving your environmental performance.

Wednesday 19th March 2008 8.30am – 11.30am at Liverpool Empire Theatre, Lime Street, Liverpool L1 1JE

Build And Host Your Own Domain For Free December 17, 2007

The ever-wonderful Lifehacker website has an interesting article on how you can have your own professional looking web domain and website using free online applications.

Once you’ve bought your domain name (e.g. mybusiness.com), you can use a variety of tools to build and host a range of different site types and email clients:

“Want your very own web site address, but don’t want to mess with pay-for hosting packages or server configuration? Today you can buy a domain name for around 10 bucks a year (or less) and map it to a variety of free web-based apps for no-mess and no-cost hosting. Typical commercial web hosting starts at around $100 a year and comes with clunky webmail and apps you have to set up yourself. Instead, you can have a full-featured web site with multiple spacious email accounts, blog or static web page hosting, and other services for free.”
