Last night the government’s Secretary of State for Culture Media & Sport, Rt Hon Andy Burnham was in Liverpool to launch Creative Apprenticeships. A new opportunity for young people to work and train in the creative industries.

Sir Alan Sugar, the very doyen of business himself says: “It’s important that employers take apprenticeships seriously. Apprentices can help a business to grow and thrive.”

High street giants like Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Superdrug and Phones 4u are increasing the number of Apprenticeships they offer, thereby ensuring they have the right skills to stay ahead of the competition.
Sainsbury’s is so pleased with its 20 pilot Apprenticeships in craft bakery, butchery and fishmongery that it has quadrupled its apprentices to 465. Tesco will take on a further 800 apprentices this year, Superdrug plans a further 1,000 and Phones 4u intends to train at least 1,000 by next April.

Apprenticeships are crucial for providing employers with the skills they need to succeed from accountancy to engineering to construction to creative industries and sport.

Here at the Chamber we have trained many apprentices and a considerable number have gone on to join our staff.

Here at the Chamber we have trained many apprentices and a considerable number have gone on to join our staff. An apprentice isn’t necessary someone who is unemployed, they may already be in work and looking to gain skills in their chosen profession, they many be a recent school leaver or a university graduate looking to start their career.

Trident Training the Chamber’s training arm is able to offer pre-screened apprentices to employers. Ruth Runacus, Trident’s dedicated Employer Support Officer said: “We aim to be fit for purpose and bear your specific needs in mind when we pre-vet candidates suitable to your vacancy with the skills you need. We pride ourselves with superb job matching.”

Trident Training offers a range of apprenticeships for young people, as well as finding suitable candidates for employers offering apprenticeships.

Taking on a young person as an apprentice with your company has several benefits including an real investment in your workforce. In 2007, Old Hall Street creative and marketing company USP Creative took on Modern Apprentice, Mohamed Ali to work at the company and study for his Business Admin Level 2 NVQ.

During his time with USP Creative Mohamed has fulfilled the role of administrator as well as managing to achieve and gain certification of his Level 2 NVQ at the end of January this year.  Apart from the run of the mill admin duties associated with clerical work, Mohamed has also been able to get involved with the design team supporting their project work, as Kim Peters, Director puts it: “Mo’ is always very helpful and willing to get stuck in, he’s been a really good asset to the team.”

When asked about his ambitions for the future Mohamed replied: “I want to be a Managing Director of a company, possibly this one!”  From his time spent with Trident Mohamed feels he has gained much to improve his career, notably his knowledge of employment rules and regulations, which he intends to utilise in the future to achieve his goal of becoming a MD. He said: “I’ve learnt more about employment law and my rights, which I didn’t know before”.

Mohamed is a great example of the hard work, ambition and commitment offered by Trident’s apprentices. For more information about on apprenticeships for your company, call Lee Wainwright or Simon Chadwick  on 0151 227 1234.
