stepclever_businessThanks to support from Stepclever, Acorn Contract Services were able to secure a £1.12m contract which will see it able to grow its business and obtain bigger contracts in future.

The Kirkdale based grounds maintenance company were able to bid for the contract thanks to a grant from Stepclever. Acorn, who specialise in soft landscaping, civil engineering and road surface works, also managed to secure a further grant from Stepclever, enabling them to purchase new machinery.

The company will now be working to restore the garden boundaries of around 900 homes in the Liverpool 7 area. The work, being undertaken as part of the GEARS project, includes the refurbishment of fencing, walls, steps and gates for houses in Kensington. The project is named as an acronym of the streets in Kensington where the project is taking place, centred around Garthowen Street and Edge Lane.

Managing Director Julie Cunningham said:

“The support from Stepclever has been fantastic; it has enabled us to bid for a major project that bigger contractors usually secure. We have been able to safeguard jobs and have also managed to create 10 new jobs for this project too. The work we are doing now will help us to secure more work in future and will show others that we are able to take on important contracts.”

Having established Acorn Contract Services around 10 years ago, Julie has seen her company go from strength to strength. Today, Acorn is a family run business which employs around 30 full time workers and also takes on additional staff for different projects.

The company will be sourcing its requirements for the contract from the same Kirkdale regeneration area they are based in, giving an example of how regeneration areas can aid a number of companies. Acorn Contract Services will be using Spotmix for waste and recycling and ABC for concrete. They will also be using Beers Timber and Builders Merchants, a materials supplier from the Vauxhall area. The project is to be completed by the end of March 2009.

The Stepclever project from which Acorn Contract Services benefited offers knowledge and support to companies based in the wards of Anfield, Everton, County, Kirkdale, Linacre and Derby who wish to tender for both public and private sector contracts.
