Liverpool Chamber is happy to promote the work of its many charitable members. Here’s some info about Claire House.

Claire House Children’s Hospice opened its doors in 1999 to look after children with life-threatening, life-shortening conditions from Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

The hospice is named after Claire Cain who sadly passed away in July 1989 just before her 10th birthday – Claire’s parents then raised the funds to build the hospice. During Claire’s illness, her parents (Chris, a nurse and Bobby) faced the additional challenge of trying to maintain a stable family atmosphere for Claire’s two sisters and her brother. The hospital was supportive but there was little opportunity for the family who lived on the Wirral to be together, they could either stay at home with little or no support, or be at her hospital bedside.

Claire House was founded to give families a choice: it offers a ‘home from home’ environment to ensure that all our children have some quality time as well as  allowing families to have those special moments together. We offer respite, palliative and end of life care to currently over 400 children from 0 – 23 years at no cost to families.

To extend our service The ‘Hospice to Home’ programme was launched in summer 2007 and is now supporting 44 families with paediatric home-based palliative care within Merseyside and Cheshire. Specialist nurses go directly into the family home providing medical help, crisis intervention, an on-call service, respite and 24-hour end of life care – allowing a family to remain together at home during this difficult time. Statistics show 42% of the children who access this service are from Merseyside.

As a direct consequence we have decided to expand our  ‘Hospice to Home’ service  by opening a new office in Liverpool to enhance our accessibility to those who need it most. We will be based in Edmund Street at Orleans House.

We are very proud to celebrate our 10th birthday next year and would like to invite you all to share this unique experience with us. Our work is entirely dependent on voluntary contributions and we receive no regular government funding. Our staff is hugely committed to providing the best standard of care and recognises that life is precious – however long or short that might be.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Helen on 0151 343 0883 or visit our website www.claire-house.org.uk for more information on how you can get involved.
