For those of us who drive through or into Liverpool city centre, here’s a final reminder of the changes happening to the direction of traffic flow on North John Street  and Stanley Street and the impact on surrounding streets.

City Centre Traffic Changes

CHANGES to traffic flow in two Liverpool city centre roads are to take place next week.

The scheme involves changes to the direction of traffic using North John Street and Stanley Street.

On Monday 10 March traffic using North John Street will change direction to go south from Dale Street towards Victoria Street with the changes being implemented after the peak hour traffic.

To finalise the changes needed for traffic signals, new carriageway surfacing and road markings it will be necessary to close North John Street to traffic on Sunday 9 March, with the road reopening to allow traffic to use in its new direction on Monday.

On Thursday 13 March the traffic flow in Stanley Street will be reversed so that  vehicles will travel north from Victoria Street to Dale Street, with the changeover being implemented in mid-morning.   Stanley Street will be closed from 9pm on Wednesday until 11.am the following day. Access will be available for residents.

It is not possible to implement these changes on the same day as it would require a number of traffic signals to be turned off at the same time, meaning there would be a lack of pedestrian crossings in the area.

Highways staff will be on duty during the changeover to help make sure the changes go smoothly and safely. Leaflets advising motorists of the road system are being circulated

These moves are part of the latest phase of the City Centre Movement Strategy, a £73m package of road improvements to provide a balanced and sustainable transport system, accessible to all.

The other elements of the latest scheme to take place on a later date are:

  • Two way traffic will be introduced on North John Street between Victoria Street and Lord Street in May 2008;
  • Traffic  flows will also be reversed in Cumberland Street to enable vehicles to travel bewteen Dale Street and Victoria Street

As a result of the changes there will be less traffic using Castle Street and options for its future usage are being considered.

Work also involve improvements to junctions; improvements to existing pedestrian crossings new taxi ranks and cycle stands and the completion of paving works in the Cavern Quarter which had to be delayed to allow other developments to take place.

The total cost of the scheme is £2.2m and funding is being partly provided through the European Regional Development Fund and the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

Cllr Mike Storey, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “These traffic changes are part of a wider scheme which will see better transport access to the new Liverpool One development.

“All the changes will be signed but while the traffic gets used to the new directions we would urge motorists and pedestrians to take extra care.

“We would also remind motorists that there are alternatives to using Dale Street if they do not need to go through the city centre – using Byrom Street and Leeds Street, for example.”
