Yes, this year’s Santa Dash is nearly upon us. This year, the organisers are hoping to get 8,000 entries to end our 08 year – if they do, it’s another record for our city (we did hold the 2005 record for the world’s biggest Santa Dash, so civic pride demands we do it again).
If dressing up like a fool and running around isn’t reason enough, there’s also a good cause for it all. Radio Merseyside Charitable Trust will be one of the charities to benefit from this year’s Santa Dash. The Trust raises funds in order to provide much needed sports, medical, educational, play and recreational equipment to all age groups. Awards are made every three months to the smaller community groups and charities in the Radio Station’s broadcasting area who struggle for funding against the larger higher profile charities.
Santa suits are included in the entrance fee of £15, so there’s no excuse not to toddle over to the Run Liverpool website and sign up.

Continuing the epic tale of Liverpool Chamber’s Head of Membership Jenny Stewart’s preparation for September’s 5K Team Challenge…
And what a weekend it was, between shopping at Liverpool One (for the smartest track pants you’ve ever seen…with a pink go faster stripe…) and sampling the yummiest restaurants that Liverpool has to offer, it was quite a shock to the system to realise that I had to get my running shoes out of the cupboard again on Sunday evening! But not to be deterred, we recommenced the training programme, increasing the number of running lamp posts and decreasing the number of walking lamp posts.
The distance to the top of the road is 4/10ths of a mile and with only three stops, I am definitely becoming a runner! Turning round at the top of the road my sister persuaded me to slow the pace and just run without the lampost breaks, just to “see how far we could go”. Some how I had obviously warmed up, and with only 2 lampposts to get back to the start, there was no point in stopping. Rather, I needed to sprint!

This September 21 sees the Liverpool 5K Team Challenge taking place in the city centre. Liverpool Chamber staff are busy putting some teams together and getting in shape for the big event. One of our gazelle-like entrants is Head of Membership Jenny Stewart. She has kindly agreed to document her Spartan-esque training routine as an inspiration for others taking on the challenge…
Having been inspired by Alan Rothwell at RunLiverpool, and his colourful description of last year’s Santa Dash, I’ve decided to take on the 5K Team Challenge – as an avid dog walker, how difficult can it be? I’ve begun a disciplined training routine under the watchful eye of my much sportier sister. I think I was compelled to train when I heard I would have to buy new shoes. Unfortunately she meant running shoes, but her advice of the more expensive the better to ensure I used them, went down well and a posh pair of trainers were duly bought. Actually I got a bit of a bargain, and managed to buy an amazing pair of high heeled, ankle strap shoes in a wonderful green…(that’s quite enough of that Jenny, the ed)
On the first night, I my trainer told me so far so good. I had gone further than I’d ever gone before…I’d actually put on my running shoes. But now I had to run! We started slowly, measuring distances by lampposts rather than milestones and are working our way up. The first night we walked a lampost and ran a lampost covering a total distance of 8/10ths of a mile. (I can be accurate because I took delight in measuring the disctance the very next morning- in the car of course!). Using the tried and tested ‘walk a bit, run a bit’ method, we’ve slowly been building up my stamina. I don’t mind admitting I’m a dedicated 20 a day smoker. I’m not proud of it but I do it. I’m also a coffee-holic, so in the Bridget Jones style: Fags: 20; Lattes (full fat): 4, and Bars of chocolates or slices of cake: 3.
At the end of week one I am covering 8/10ths of a mile. Running 3 lamposts, walking one, but looking forward to the weekend off!
Will she go for the burn? Or just burn out? Look out for next week’s update to find out!

Not so long ago the Liverpool Corporate Cup was the flagship event in the road racing calendar. It had a great city centre course and was attracting more that 3,000 entries from runners both in and out of the city.
Due to development work in the city it had to relocate to Croxteth Park in 2005 and since then numbers have declined due in part to the out of town location.
Liverpool Chamber and L13 10K are currently in negotiation to bring the Liverpool Corporate Cup back to the city as the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce 5k Team Challenge.
Comprising four team members from businesses in the city and the wider Merseyside area, we hope the race will take place on Sunday 21 September 2008. We feel it’s a great opportunity to promote the city in its European Capital of Culture year, and give both chamber members and other businesses a chance to endorse health and fitness within their organisations.
Alan Rothwell of Run Liverpool said: “We think we’ve got a city centre location, starting and finishing within sight of the three graces. We’re hoping for 3000 runners, and we’d love you to help. Apart from your businesses team entry, we also have some fantastic sponsorship opportunities. Would you like to have 3000 runners wearing your t-shirts? Can you provide the goody bags or winners medals? Or perhaps donate the water or fruit on the day? We’ll give you great publicity leading up to the event and of course on the day.
Please note, each team should have at least one female member.”

On 11th July, they are holding a conference and need a place to hold it. They are looking for a small hotel venue (30 people) and rooms for delegates.
It would be fantastic to hold the first Santa Dash Conference in the City in ’08 as Liverpool are the official record holders for the event. If you think you can help out, email email@example.com
