wall-e_1a_900MERIT’s next free event looks at the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. This came into force in January 2007 and aims to both reduce the amount of WEEE being produced and encourage everyone to reuse, recycle and recover it. The WEEE Directive also aims to improve the environmental performance of businesses that manufacture, supply, use, recycle and recover electrical and electronic equipment.

If you are an importer, rebrander or manufacturer of new electrical or electronic equipment then it’s likely that you will need to comply with the UK’s WEEE Regulations, which in part implement the WEEE Directive. If you do need to comply, then you must register on a producer compliance scheme.

This event will provide information and advice on complying with the WEEE Regulations and challenge you to think about the environmental consequences before deciding to replace equipment. Do you really need to buy a new product or could you buy a refurbished product instead. If you have working equipment that you no longer need, could you think about passing it on to others instead of throwing it away?

Also covered within the seminar, will be an update on the Batteries Directive which will affect businesses that produce, supplies or disposes of batteries and accumulators. If you manufacture or design battery powered products, you will need to ensure that the batteries can be removed from the products and supply instructions on how to remove them.

Thursday 18th September 2008

A 2008 McKinsey report has found that companies who have more women on their boards, more higher status women (CFO/CEO), and more women on the senior executive team, on average, outperform their sector in terms of return on equity, operating result and share price.

A report for Intellect, the IT Trade Body clearly shows that there is an equivalent case for gender diversity in the IT sector.

In this Merit Event, Gillian Arnold, Chair of the Intellect Women in IT Forum will discuss the business benefits of including women in your IT organisation, and the ways in which you can attract women to your business to be part of your successful organisation.

Gillian has twenty-eight years experience in the IT industry, the last eighteen being with IBM. She has broad experience in customer facing technical, sales, business development, strategic marketing and consultancy roles.

She proved her expertise in managing and establishing teams for new products and teams with cross-industry and cross platform experience across EMEA and the UK and is currently a Technical Manager in IBM Systems Group.

Gillian Chairs the Intellect ‘Women in IT Forum’, sits on the board of Directors for the UKRC for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology, and contributes IT women’s groups, such as the BCS Strategic Forum for women.

Only Half Of SMEs Have A Website November 21, 2007

Today, the BBC is asking the question ‘do small firms really need a website’?

According to the Federation of Small Businesses, only about half SMEs have an online presence.

The article goes on to point out that having a website is not always appropriate, depending on the business concerned. However, it also makes the point that an effective site allows people beyond your usual catchment area to find out about you and potentially become your customers.

Even without online sales functionality, a website can be a great asset as a marketing tool or as an online portfolio, listing your goods, services or past projects. This can give interested parties a sense of who you are and what you do, thus creating an element of trust and confidence in you before they even get in touch.

Obviously there are many different levels of web sites available. From all singing, all dancing e-commerce sites to simple brochure sites, the choice is yours. It doesn’t even have to cost a lot. You could have a company blog (like the one you’re reading now) up and running in an afternoon, and all for free. We use WordPress, but there are lots of simple, low cost solutions out there.

Liverpool Chamber is a firm believer in using technology to boost business. If you need any help or advice on how ICT can help you, please contact us or our good friends at Merit.
