Achtung, ne’er do wells!
Liverpool police and security / loss management staff are responding to Liverpool’s increasingly international population by becoming multilingual.
Business Crime Direct, based at Liverpool Chamber, are providing a booklet of translation cards to city centre police, street crime wardens as well as loss prevention & security staff in the retail, hotel and commercial worlds.
The cards feature phrases that such professionals may need to use, such as how to identify themselves as police / security, reason for stopping someone, asking for name and address and reading someone their rights. Even if the translated text is difficult for non-speakers to pronounce, or is in non-Roman script, the relevant passages can be shown to the suspects. Languages include French, Italian, Iranian, Chinese, Latvian and Turkish.
It is hoped that by breaking down communication barriers, potentially problematic situations can be more easily dealt with.
Let’s hope not too many people have to hear the words ‘Esta preso’ around the city in the future!
